HAIKUS

Syllables and poetry

Syllables are chunks of sound that make up a word. Each word contains at least one syllable. Breaking a word into syllables means you can spell a small bit at a time:
• hap – py
• yes
hos – pi – tal

Haiku is an old Japanese style of poem. Here is a haiku called Time:

Backward went the clock,
Tick-tock. Time went backwards fast.
I was young again.

Get writing:
Write out the poem and split the words into syllables. Remember, some words will only have one syllable.

Count how many syllables are in the poem. How many are on each line?

Complete the rules for a haiku:

A haiku has ________ lines.
The first line of a haiku has ________ syllables.
The second line of a haiku has ________ syllables.
The third line of a haiku has ________ syllables.
A haiku contains ________ syllables
